What's All the Buzz About IFS?

We have all known those sudden, disorienting moments when our emotional weather changes without warning. You are sitting at your desk or cooking dinner, and a seemingly minor email or a partner’s casual tone sends a sharp spike of anxiety through your chest. Or perhaps a sudden wave of heaviness settles over your shoulders, draining your motivation before the day has even begun.

When stress, depression, or emotional turmoil hit, it can feel like an invisible storm taking over your entire mind. But if you pause and look closer, these intense reactions are rarely about the single moment happening in front of you. They are signals that an internal alarm has been tripped—that a specific aspect, or part, of your inner world has been triggered into action.

The Art of Healing: Blending IFS and EMDR

Real, lasting transformation doesn't come from forcing these reactions to stop, fighting with your anxiety, or trying to think your way out of depression. True relief happens when we meet these triggered parts with deep understanding and gentle, targeted healing techniques.

By integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS) with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), we address both the psychological landscape and the physical nervous system where trauma and stress reside.

Through IFS, we stop viewing your anxiety or low mood as a defect to be eliminated. Instead, we approach these parts with genuine curiosity and compassion. We learn to listen to what your protective parts are afraid would happen if they let down their guard, and we extend comfort to the young, hurt parts holding past pain.

Through EMDR, we use bilateral stimulation (such as gentle side-to-side eye movements or tapping) to help your brain and body safely reprocess the old memories that keep triggering these parts in the first place. EMDR unhooks the emotional charge from old wounds, allowing your nervous system to finally realize that the past danger is over.

Feeling Lighter, Connected, and Capable

When your parts are unburdened and your nervous system no longer feels perpetually under siege, the shift in your daily life is profound:

  • You regain your energy: You stop expending endless internal effort trying to suppress unwanted feelings or manage internal conflict. That trapped physical and emotional energy is freed, leaving you feeling lighter, clearer, and more grounded.

  • Your relationships transform: Instead of reacting defensively or shutting down when conflict arises with a partner, friend, or child, you can stay anchored in your core, calm Self. You begin responding from a place of curiosity and clarity rather than old emotional triggers.

  • You move through life with quiet confidence: Stressors that used to hijack your whole week become manageable moments. You trust yourself to navigate difficult feelings without getting swept away by them.

You do not have to live at the mercy of internal emotional storms or carry the weight of triggered parts alone. Compassionate, specialized support is here to help you bring harmony back to your inner world.

I'm Tyra Butler, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in Corona, California, serving individual adults, children, couples, and families. For more than 16 years, I've had the privilege of walking alongside people as they navigate some of life's most challenging seasons.

I truly love what I do. I believe healing and/or personal growth begins in the context of a safe, authentic relationship where people feel genuinely seen, heard, understood, and accepted. Whether I'm sitting on the floor in a playroom with a child, helping a couple reconnect, or supporting an individual through anxiety, grief, trauma, or life transitions, my goal is the same: to create a space where lasting growth can naturally unfold.

My approach is grounded in compassion, relational neuroscience, attachment theory, and evidence-based practices. Rather than focusing on fixing people, I believe each person already possesses an innate capacity for healing and resilience. My role is to provide the empathy, safety, and support that allow those strengths to emerge.
